Reading these
- The big number is the viewport in CSS pixels: the area the page is laid out in, and what a media query answers to. It is not the screen — browser chrome, the address bar and a scrollbar all come out of it.
- A phone that advertises 1170 × 2532 shows this page at about 390 × 844: the pixel ratio is 3, so every CSS pixel is drawn with nine real ones. Design against the small number, export images against the large one.
- Chrome’s device toolbar changes both numbers, so the values here are the emulated device’s, not your monitor’s. Browser zoom moves the pixel ratio too — a ratio like 1.25 on a desktop usually means the page is zoomed or the system is scaling.
- Everything here is read from your own browser and stays in it. Nothing is sent anywhere.
