Good to know
- Characters are counted as a reader counts them. An emoji made of several code points, or a letter with a separate accent mark, is one character here even though the raw string is longer.
- Byte size depends on the encoding, which is why it is a choice: the same sentence takes more bytes as UTF-16 than as UTF-8, and non-ASCII letters cost more than one byte each.
- Reading time assumes 200 words a minute, which is an average for prose. Dense or technical text takes longer, so treat it as a rough figure.
- The numbers update as you type, and nothing is sent anywhere while you do it.
