Good to know

  • The two columns are the whole point. A drive sold as 1 TB holds 1000⁴ bytes, which your operating system reports as roughly 0.91 TiB — nothing is missing, the units differ.
  • kB, MB and GB are powers of 1000 by standard; KiB, MiB and GiB are the powers of 1024 that were meant all along.
  • Network speeds are quoted in bits rather than bytes, so a 100 Mbit line moves about 12.5 MB a second at best.
  • Everything happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to the server or stored anywhere.
