Good to know

  • Base64 encodes bytes, not characters — which bytes your text becomes depends entirely on the encoding picked above.
  • UTF-8 is the right answer unless you are feeding an old system that insists on a specific code page.
  • A legacy code page holds at most 256 characters. Anything outside it — an emoji, a Turkish letter in Windows-1252 — becomes a question mark, and that is reported above the output.
  • Encoding happens entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to the server or stored anywhere.
