Good to know

  • The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. That is also what makes this trustworthy for checking a download: nothing about the file is disclosed to anyone.
  • Files above 256 MB are refused. The browser's cryptography cannot hash a file piece by piece — it only accepts the whole thing at once, so a large file would be held in memory in full.
  • The comparison field works out which algorithm you pasted from the length of the value, so you do not have to know, and it ignores capitals and any filename that came along with it.
  • A matching checksum only proves the file is the one the checksum was made from. If both came from the same compromised page it proves nothing — take the checksum from somewhere else.
